Saying Trump Issues 'An Invitation To Corruption,' Schiff Promises Hearings

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA.) outlined how meticulously President Donald Trump has cultivated the potential for corruption in and around the Oval Office.

“There is a culture of impunity in the White House,” Schiff told MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace on Thursday. “They basically have defanged the justice department of any meaningful oversight by installing (Trump’s) criminal defense lawyers to run that department. They fired the truly independent inspector generals. They've done away with all the safeguards. So, in that environment, you have these people of very dubious morals who are essentially told 'there's no one watching. You can do whatever you want. No one's going to hold you accountable.' An invitation to corruption.

Trump appointed his legal defense lawyer Todd Blanche, from his hush money criminal trial, to serve as the second-highest ranking Justice Department official. In March, he also fired at least 20 leaders of federal offices created by Congress to hold administrations accountable.

Schiff also warned that, unlike past administration, the modern Republican Party is beholden to Trump. All but five Republicans voted in favor of an effort to dismiss Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial for “incitement of insurrection” a mere 20 days after Trump led the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol siege.

“Republicans didn't want to investigate Russia’s interference in our election. They didn't want to investigate the president's effort to extort [Ukranian President Volodymyr] Zelensky into helping him in the next election.”

Instead, it fell to Democrats to conduct investigations as a minority, and Schiff said that’s how it will go again this year.

“[T] his is what we're going to have to do now,” Schiff said. “We're likewise seeing people step forward. I did a hearing a few days ago with Rep. Jamie Raskin, where we had witnesses who both quit or were fired at the Justice Department because they saw corrupt things going on that they would not participate in, and I think that hearing was powerful. We need to do a lot more of that.”

“We're not without our tools, even in the minority,” he added.

Treasury Secretary Reportedly 'Looking For Exit' To Save Credibility

Treasury Secretary Reportedly 'Looking For Exit' To Save Credibility

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is allegedly leaping for a window after dashing his “credibility” against the rocks of Trump’s disastrous tariffs, claims MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle.

“Some [sources] have said to me, he’s looking for an exit door to try to get himself to the Fed, because in the last few days he’s really hurting his own credibility and history in the markets,” Ruhle told MSNBC’s Morning Joe, according to The Daily Beast.

Bessent, who built a $500 million fortune as a hedge fund manager before working for Trump and entangling his name in Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff, was not a full-throated supporter of earlier tariff proposals. After Trump announced his new trade duties this week and went to play golf, Bessent found himself urging international allies not to retaliate.

I would advise none of the countries to panic. I wouldn’t try to retaliate because as long as you don’t retaliate this is the high end of the numbers and I think the market could have certainty that this is the number, barring retaliation,” Bessent told Bloomberg. “We got a ceiling, and we can see if there’s a different floor.”

Many international trading partners refused to let Trump trample them, however. China launched reciprocal tariffs, accelerating a trade war with US goods and sending the Dow Jones down more than 2,200 points by the Friday bell ring. Canada — once a staunch U.S. ally — also will match US tariffs, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Ruhle said her sources claim Trump is “not listening” to his own treasury secretary, dangerously alienating one of the more serious voices familiar with market trends in the administration.

“[Bessent] actually understands how the markets work and, what’s happening right now, is only going to hurt markets," she said.

As president-elect, Trump claimed in November that Bessent “will help me usher in a new Golden Age for the United States.”

“Together we will Make America Rich Again, Prosperous Again, Affordable Again, and, most importantly, Great Again,” Trump said.

At Justice Department, Trump Calls CNN And MSNBC 'Illegal'

At Justice Department, Trump Calls CNN And MSNBC 'Illegal'

President Donald Trump, just 54 days into his second term, declared himself “the chief law enforcement officer in our country” and labeled two major news organizations, CNN and MSNBC, as “illegal,” while further denouncing their coverage as “illegal.” His remarks Thursday afternoon were delivered to officials at the Department of Justice, in an appearance that shattered a decades-old norm designed to insulate the department from political interference—a safeguard established in response to President Richard Nixon’s abuses of power. Trump’s statements have drawn sharp criticism for their authoritarian tone and direct attack on press freedom, sparking alarm.

“I believe that CNN and MSNDC,” said Trump (video below), using his own derogatory twist on MSNBC’s name, “who literally write 97.6 percent bad about me, are political arms of the Democrat Party. And in my opinion, they’re really corrupt and they’re illegal. What they do is illegal.”

Trump also “rallied against the press,” in general, “claiming they are influencing judges and, without any evidence, claiming the media works in coordination with political campaigns, which is not allowed in the news industry,” The Hillreported.

It has been widely reported that during his first term in office, Fox News host Sean Hannity spoke with Trump “nearly every weeknight.”

“These networks and these newspapers are really no different than a highly paid political operative. And it has to stop, it has to be illegal, it’s influencing judges and it’s really, eh, changing law and it just cannot be legal. I don’t believe it’s legal and they do it in total coordination with each other,” the President alleged.

Trump’s remarks were just a part of a speech that lasted more than one hour, during which he “delivered an insult-laden speech that shattered the traditional notion of DOJ independence,” as Politicoreported. During those remarks, Trump also “labeled his courtroom opponents ‘scum,’ judges ‘corrupt’ and the prosecutors who investigated him ‘deranged.'”

“With the DOJ logo directly behind him, Trump called for his legal tormentors to be sent to prison.”

It is not the first time the President, who is a convicted felon, has declared MSNBC “illegal.”

Last month, when MSNBC host Joy Reid left the news network, Trump unleashed a torrent of hatred.

“Lowlife Chairman of ‘Concast,’ Brian Roberts, the owner of Ratings Challenged NBC and MSDNC, has finally gotten the nerve up to fire one of the least talented people in television, the mentally obnoxious racist, Joy Reid,” Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform. “Based on her ratings, which were virtually non-existent, she should have been ‘canned’ long ago, along with everyone else who works there. Also thrown out was Alex Wagner, the sub on the seriously failing Rachel Maddow show. Rachel rarely shows up because she knows there’s nobody watching, and she also knows that she’s got less television persona than virtually anyone on television except, perhaps, Joy Reid.”

Trump’s Friday afternoon assault on the media was swiftly criticized.

“This is what a dictator sounds like,” wrote U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI).

“Journalism is legal,” declared award-winning investigative journalist Lindsay Beyerstein. “Criticizing the president is legal. Being a Democrat is legal. Nothing Donald Trump is ranting about here is a crime and he’s disgracing himself and the Department of Justice by talking this way.”

Journalist Matt O’Brien observed, “Trump wants to get rid of freedom of speech because he wants to be a dictator. And unlike his first term, he now has a government full of fascists who are eager to make that a reality.”

Marlow Stern, adjunct assistant professor of journalism at Columbia Journalism School wrote: “sounds like putin.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning political columnist Kyle Whitmire wrote simply: “Enemy of the Constitution.”

More Google Searches For Project 2025 Than Taylor Swift Or NFL

More Google Searches For Project 2025 Than Taylor Swift Or NFL

With four months to go before Election Day, Google search results are showing one major political topic currently attracting Americans' interest more than even professional sports and pop culture: Project 2025.

On Wednesday, MSNBC host Ari Melber showed a graphic of trending Google search results in the week following President Joe Biden's first televised general election debate with former President Donald Trump. Google showed that searches for the far-right authoritarian Project 2025 playbook describing the GOP's policy agenda for a second Trump term outpaced searches for pop star Taylor Swift, and the National Football League (NFL).

"More people are looking into this controversial project than even the woman you see on your screen, who is of documented fascination to so many people around the world," Melber said, as he showed images of Swift and her sold-out Eras Tour on the screen. "Shout out to Taylor. I don't mean to bring her too deep into politics."

"I'm not talking about just news watchers or political junkies or even just, say, Trump foes," he continued. "You don't get past those Taylor [Swift] and NFL levels without a heck of a lot of people searching Project 2025... But as Trump walks away from it, a heck of a lot more people are now reading up about something Donald Trump himself wants to disown."

"People are looking into this," he added.

As Melber noted, the former president has been trying to distance himself from Project 2025 in the last week with little success. On July 5, Trump posted to his Truth Social platform that he found some of its proposals "absolutely ridiculous and abysmal," though he didn't specify which ones. He also insisted he had "no idea" who was behind it, but that he "wish[ed] them luck."

On the same day of Trump's post, Google Trends showed that "Project 2025" was the fifth-most popular search in the United States ("Supreme Court" was the first). And CNN reporter Alayna Treene tweeted: "Many people involved in Project 2025 are close to Trump world & have served in his previous [administration]."

Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich also blasted Trump over his Project 2025 denial in a column for the Guardian, pointing out the numerous former Trump White House staffers who are now closely tied to Project 2025. Russ Vought — his former Office of Management and Budget director – is the head of the Center for Renewing America, which is one of the main partner organizations supporting Project 2025. Former White House Presidential Personnel Office director John McEntee is also a senior advisor to Project 2025.

One of the primary objectives of Project 2025 is to pre-screen tens of thousands of potential appointees to a second Trump administration, and then place them strategically throughout federal agencies after Trump signs an executive order dubbed "Schedule F." As comedian John Oliver discussed in detail on his HBO show "Last Week Tonight," numerous employment protections for federal workers would be eliminated under Schedule F, allowing the number of presidential appointees to drastically increase from roughly 5,000 to more than 54,000.

After placing pre-vetted appointees throughout federal agencies (who are screened primarily based on their loyalty to Trump and the MAGA agenda), Trump — or any Republican president — would be able to implement policies with little interference from Congress and the courts. Some of the more controversial policies include ending no-fault divorce, banning abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape and incest, banning books about slavery in schools and defunding the FBI and the Department of Justice, among others.
